Turmeric, also known as turmeric rhizome, has found its wide application in cooking. It is used in cooking as a seasoning and as a dye in the food industry. The component of turmeric, responsible for the characteristic taste and color, is curcumin. It has a number of properties that positively affect the human body.

Health-promoting properties of curcumin

  • A strong antioxidant (slows down the aging process, eliminates free radicals)
  • Supports the immune system
  • Helps the nervous system function properly
  • May help reduce the negative symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Soothes skin inflammation (eczema, psoriasis, acne)
  • Positively affects the liver (stimulates the secretion of bile)
  • Improves intestinal function (reduces flatulence)
  • Has antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic effects
  • Improves digestion
  • May help reduce headaches / migraines
  • Reduces symptoms premenstrual tension (PMS)

Why do we combine curcumin with piperine?

Piperine is a component of black pepper and is responsible for the characteristic spicy taste. Thanks to its properties, it causes easier penetration of curcumin from the digestive tract into the blood. The absorption of curcumin in the body is low, so it should be combined with piperine to increase its bioavailability. Additionally, a beneficial solution would be to heat it and combine it with fat (curcumin does not dissolve well in water).

Where to add turmeric?

Actually everywhere! For soups (it will increase the health benefits of traditional broth), for roasted vegetables for dinner (it tastes great with sweet potatoes), for morning oatmeal/buckwheat porridge to stimulate metabolism and have a thermogenic effect on the body, for water with ginger and lemon (to support immunity in the autumn-winter period), for dishes with lentils to give them a characteristic Indian flavor. As you can see, it has a wide range of uses : ) WARNING it can stain the skin, so it is worth working with it in gloves.

The daily dose of curcumin in the form of a supplement should be 250-500 mg.
